What’s it all about? Topher lives with his dad, as his mum has past away (Topher wouldn’t like this description as he thinks she hasn’t gone somewhere, but is just dead). He leads quite a lonely life as his dad is always busy with work or making ‘friends’. Suddenly, out of nowhere a cat turns up and tries to befriend Topher. He is initially unsure as he doesn’t want to mask his mums memory or open up his heart again. But soon he knows real friendship. But then, Ka (his name for the cat) disappears. Sometimes he finds her, until eventually she goes missing for a long time. Can he find her again?
Why should I read it? A deep story of friendship, new and old, human and non-human and dealing with loss. Topher’s friendship with Ellie, the new girl at school in complex, but throughout the story he learns to trust again. Super for children learning about Ancient Egypt, as there are a lot of references to it, especially in the second half of the book. And, there’s a whole series of them, travelling to different periods of history.
