What motivates you?

Well, for those that watch TV in England in the 1990s, it’s definitely not Mr Motivator…

I’ve been asked this question before at work. I think in some way it’s fear: fear of not getting something done, not being the best, not being good enough (compared to my own expectations of things). But I don’t mean this in a bad way, I just have high expectations of myself. I want to be respected and good at what I do. I also can’t do something half hearted. If your doing something, it has to be good by the end or there’s no point.

Personally, outside of work, I always want to achieve things. I want to get better at something, improve as a human being, and that’s what keeps me practising my guitar, or writing, or doing art. Other reasons to do things are to feel good, that’s a great motivator. This is where social media can be dangerous. You end up comparing yourself to other people, and that’s really bad for your mental health. Everyone’s journey is different. Linked into feeling good, another motivator is to do things for other people, that gets you to do things.
