What’s it all about?
This book is a graphic novel and biography of Irena. It tells the remarkable story of her life focusing mainly on her amazing exploits during World War 2. Through her bravery, she helped the Jewish people who were living under Nazi rule. With a small group of other Polish women, she risked her life to help the Jewish population by smuggling food and other essentials through the armed gates of the Warsaw ghetto. Her main risk though, was creating a hidden network of people to smuggle out and hide Jewish babies. And, hidden in a jar, she left their family names ready for when the war was over. The pictures are quite simple and with a dull palette, but very well drawn and help to tell the story. Great for history lessons or PSHE for children in Years 5 or 6. There is a whole series of these books based on amazing women.
