I was really interested to read this book, which is one of a whole series about current football stars, as I had recently seen the authors taking part in a live event for World Book Day 2021. I’m sure that this is a series that will just grow and grow!
There are actually many similar books on the market, which aim to help children who are reluctant to read get into reading through a shared passion. However, that is not meant to be disparaging, as this book has its place and would probably do just what it’s meant to do – engage children who love football into reading about it. The reason for this is that it is filled with excitingly engaging pages, through the large in your face, black and white comic style illustrations, quotes, a VAR Robot who dispenses fact bombs and footballing in-jokes. Perhaps it might even inspire the next generation of more society conscience footballers.
As well as writing biographies about famous people and learning about Rashford’s charity work there could also be the opportunity to delve into the maths involved in the book with its plethora of footballing stats. Some of the illustrations use footballing cards as a design and this would be fun to create in class.
This book is perfect for Years 2 – 3.
Thank you to the UKLA’s 4-11 magazine for the book. This review may also find it’s way into that wonderful journal as well!
